Net Zero Strategy: What It Means and How to Get There

Date: 1/6/2025 12:00:00 AM

In response to the accelerating climate crisis, countries worldwide are committing to "2050 Net-Zero Emissions" targets, challenging all sectors to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions. Adopting a corporate net-zero strategy helps organizations align with these global climate initiatives and demonstrates their leadership in sustainability. Solutions from Advantech, including CarbonR, ECOWatch, and Compressor, EquipPHM, HVAC, provide the resources companies need to implement effective net-zero strategies and contribute meaningfully to the global climate effort.

What Is Net Zero?

Net zero represents a state where greenhouse gas emissions of a company are effectively neutralized by either reducing emissions to near-zero or offsetting the remaining emissions through methods such as carbon capture or reforestation. This objective aligns with the global target to cap global warming at 1.5°C, primarily driven by the 2015 Paris Agreement. For companies, net zero means taking responsibility across all stages of their operations and supply chain to actively reduce and eventually eliminate their carbon impact. For a deeper understanding of carbon footprints, refer to the Understand What Carbon Footprint Is & Why It’s Important.

Industries Most Capable of Adopting Net-Zero Emissions Strategies

Building Industry

Buildings account for around 40% of global energy-related carbon emissions, largely due to heating, cooling, and electricity use. Through energy efficiency measures and renewable energy adoption, the building sector can greatly reduce its carbon footprint. Digital solutions, like smart building management systems, support efficient energy use and contribute to reaching net zero.

Transportation Industry

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book.

Transportation accounts for approximately 25% of global emissions, covering freight, logistics, and passenger vehicles. Strategies like adopting electric vehicles, optimizing logistics, and exploring sustainable fuels make a notable difference in emissions reduction.

Manufacturing Industry

This sector is a large consumer of energy and resources, producing emissions through both energy use and industrial processes. By adopting clean energy sources, improving process efficiencies, and optimizing supply chains, manufacturers can drive meaningful reductions in their emissions.

Energy Industry

The high reliance on fossil fuels can be a major source of carbon emissions, the energy sector is at the core of the transition to net zero. Transitioning to renewable energy sources and adopting carbon capture technologies to optimize efficiency across the grid, which can help reduce emissions and support the overall net-zero strategy.

Agriculture Industry

Agriculture produces greenhouse gas emissions through livestock, soil management, crop production, and the use of machinery. However, by monitoring moisture, nutrient levels, soil organic carbon, etc., it provides immediate feedback to optimize water and fertilizer application, reduce waste, and lower emissions. By identifying and addressing high-emissions phases, the agriculture sector can significantly advance net zero targets.

Strategies for Businesses to Reach Net-Zero Emissions

Step 1: Identify Your Baseline

Establishing a baseline of carbon emissions can help a company to achieve net-zero emissions. Tracking and measuring the total greenhouse gas across Scope 1, 2, and 3, which are direct emissions, indirect emissions form energy, and other indirect emissions, companies can set realistic reduction targets, prioritize high-impact areas, and monitor progress toward their net-zero goals with precision.

Step 2: Set Science-Based Targets

Following science-based and internationally recognized standards such as the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), and the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol enables companies to set emissions reduction targets that are credible and align with climate science. Therefore, businesses are able to contribute to the net zero transition while meeting regulatory requirements.

Step 3: Enhance Energy Efficiency

Improve energy efficiency with features like automatic alerts on unusual energy spikes and data visualization. Companies can quickly address wasteful behaviors and improve energy management. This approach supports sustainable practices and also reduces energy costs, helping businesses reduce their carbon footprint and operating expenses in a streamlined, proactive manner.

Step 4: Adopt Renewable Energy

Switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, or hydropower is one of the most effective ways for companies to reduce their carbon emissions. Companies can partner with renewable energy providers to source clean electricity directly, and invest in on-site installations, such as solar panels or wind turbines, to generate their own energy. Furthermore, the battery storage systems can store excess renewable energy for use in periods of high demand, thereby increasing the efficiency and impact of renewable energy investments.

Step 5: Engage Supply Chain Partners

A company's emissions often extend across the entire value chain, known as Scope 3 emissions (emissions from suppliers, transport, product use and waste). To address these issues, companies can work with suppliers to adopt greener practices, such as using low-carbon materials or improving energy efficiency. Companies can also set sustainability standards for suppliers and provide guidance on emissions tracking.

Step 6: Offset Remaining Emissions

Achieving net zero often requires addressing residual emissions that cannot be eliminated. Carbon offsetting offers a practical solution, allowing companies to neutralize these emissions by investing in initiatives like reforestation, carbon credit programs, and renewable energy projects. By collaborating with certified offset providers, businesses can ensure that their offsets are credible, measurable, and aligned with recognized environmental standards, like those from Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) or Gold Standard.
